Penalties for Copyright Infringements

Under Australian law there are serious penalties for copyright infringement. Corporations and individuals can be liable for substantial fines and in some cases imprisonment.

You may be liable for penalties if you do any of the following without the permission of the copyright owner:

  • screen a film in public
  • authorise the public screening of a film
  • provide premises for an unauthorised public screening

A copyright owner whose rights are infringed may seek orders from a court, including financial compensation.
